Today in India English language and knowledge is undeniable. We spend years and years of our  time learning English in schools, colleges, universities and other various institutions and some private activities and measures. In my perspective "English Grammar" is the foundation, the basic, the fundamentals to create something wonderful around you.

I've been training in English Grammar lessons a little more deeply so that i can attend any interviews without any flaws. In this article we will learn a little more about "Idioms & Phrases", in the same manner as I read. Before getting into explanations, examples and things we will see what does Idioms & Phrases means. I can give you the meaning in two different sentences, which i referred in some books and dictionaries, obviously. They are:

Meaning 1:

A group of words established by usage as having a meaning not deducible from those of the individual words.

Meaning 2:

A small group of words standing together as a conceptual unit, typically forming a component of a clause.

I think you now you are clear with the meaning of  "Idioms & Phrases". Now we'll see some real examples and lets get into some action. I'll explain with examples that I've understood with.

Absorb in- Ram is always open and above board. ( means being frank)

Keep abreast of- Students must read the newspapers to keep abreast of the time.

A bird's eye view- You can have the bird's eye view of the whole city from the top of the light house.

Account for- He could not account for his misfortune.

Accustom- I am accustomed to taking bath in cold water.

Afford to- Rich people can afford to have an apple a day.

Agree with- I agree with all you say.

Ahead of- Ravi is far ahead of other students in science

Aim at- He aims at a first class in the next examination.

Answer back- Father punished his son for answering him back

All along- He was not trustworthy all along

All by oneself- He made it all by himself.

All in All- My father is all in all in this brach office.

Join in- You are all invited to join in the party.

Keep an eye- Keep an eye on my box.

Keep at arm's length- They have been friendly, but always kept us at arm's length.

Keep company- Keep company with wise people.

Keep one's head above water- I cannot save a paise a month with this income but, some how I keep my head above water.

Make a clean breast of- The witness made a clean breast of the matter.

make an apology- You must make an apology for your mistakes.

make a lot- He made a lot on that bet.

make head or tail- I have read the story twice, but i cannot make head or tail on it.

make off- The thief made off quickly when the policemen appeared.

make of- He does not know what to make of his wife.

make one's blood boil- It makes my blood boil to hear him speak of my mother tongue.

make ones' mark- At an early age Tagore made his mark as a poet.

make out- please make out a cheque for 100 rs.

make out- I cannot make out what he wants.

make straight for- the guest made straight for the wash basin.

make up ones' mind- I have made up my mind to open a shop in this town.

break down- Sita broke down when she heard the bad news.

break in- Nagula knew how to break in horses.

break journey- I am breaking my journey at Agra.

Sometimes I think using these Idioms & Phrases makes you smarter, I mean much more smarter, we can use the idioms to reduce big sentences into two or three words.

break the record- Ram broke the record in the running race.

break into- theives broke into the shop

break out- a revolution has broken out

breaks up- the college breaks up on friday.

break the news- I was asked to break the news on his son;s death to him.

speak out- don not be afraid to speak out.

speak up- you must learn to speak up for yourself

spoon feed- now all students expect their teachers to spoon feed the lessons.

take advantage of- they took advantage of the illiterates.

take after- my son will be taking after my husbands place at the office.

take  apart- my sons knows to take the radio apart and to put the parts again together.

take back- take back what you said about my brother just now.

pocket an insult- the manager insulted him , his poverty forced him to pocket an insult.

poke one's nose into- would you mind our own business, instead of poking your nose into my affairs?

put down- the army put down the riot with a firm hand

put in- we put in a lot of work even on holiday

put off-we must put off this work until next month

out of breath- he went out of breath even before.

out of print- my latest novel is out of print.

off day- Ram has off day on friday.

pass away- his mother passed away yesterday.

pass on- tomorrow is a holiday, please pass this on to others

pay off old scores- Bhema wanted to pay off old scores.

pay through the nose- I paid through the nose for this chair.
